For hiking, backpacking, and camping, few places in Georgia offers as many of these recreational opportunities as the area surrounding Ellijay and Gilmer County. Within a 40 mile radius of Ellijay are the following:
Long Trails:

Benton MacKaye Trail - Beginning atop Springer Mounain as well, now has sections completed running into Tennesee and North Carolina.
Duncan Ridge Trail - Built to create a large loop utilizing the Appalachian Trail, sections of this trail are described as the most strenuous in the state.
Pinhoti Trail - The recently completed Georgia sections now link the Alabama sections of the same named trail to the Benton MacKaye Trail in Georgia.
Wildernesses:
Cohutta Wilderness - A rugged wild area, among the largest wilderness areas in the eastern United States, containing a large network of trails. 26 trails totaling 127 miles allows the hiker/backpacker options from short dayhikes, to a multiday trip.
