Owners Travis and Shirley Crouch rely on decades of back-country experience to recommend the right piece of gear or clothing to their customers. Travis grew up just down the street from Gene Espy, the second person to ever thru-hike the Appalachian Trail back in 1951. As a young boy listening to Mr. Espy speak of his experience, Travis caught the back-country bug very early in life. He did his first long distance hike on the AT back in 1974, and has been coming back for more ever since.
Travis has completed the 287 mile Benton MacKaye (rhymes with sky) trail as well as the 2187 mile Appalachian Trail which begins in Gilmer County just east of Ellijay. The Appalachian Trail (AT) follows the spine of the Appalachian Mountain range from Georgia through 14 states to its northern terminus atop Mount Katahdin in Maine. These experiences, and many more like them have given Travis a good sense of what works and what doesn’t in the widely varied conditions likely to be encountered on a given adventure.
Shirley and Travis were married back in 1981, and the outdoor adventure experiences have continued for them both to this day. In their time together, Shirley and Travis have hiked, paddled, bike toured, and climbed all across North America. These excursions have taken place in all sorts of terrain and weather conditions. A couple of years ago, Shirley was able to walk coast to coast across England on the 200 mile Coast to Coast trail with our daughter, Whitney. These experiences have built up a wealth of expertise in back-county travel.
The next time you are planning a trip into the wild, why not put Travis and Shirley’s experience to work for you as you make decisions about your itinerary as well as your clothing and equipment needs, Chances are that Travis and Shirley have “been there, done that,” so take advantage of their expertise before you head out on your next adventure.
